Three women from the NWOSU track and field team set new school records at Norman at a meet hosted by Southern Nazarene University on Saturday.
Shackera Douglas, a junior, won fifth place in the 60 meters race, with a time 7.85 seconds to set the school record. She also took first place in the 200-meter run with a time of 26.17 seconds.
Cadence Long-Torres, a freshman, placed 10th in the one-mile run, setting a school record of 5:49.23.
Sophia Kenyon, a junior, hefted the weight 13.28m (43 feet 7 inches) to place 11th in the weight throw.
Both men’s and women teams competed in more than 21 events at the first meet of the semester. This is the first year back after a 27 years period without a men’s track team.
Head Coach Derrick Young Jr. shared his overall thoughts on the meet: “I thought it was a good first meet for everyone. We saw what we can improve on.”
He emphasized the importance of hard work, technical approach, and discipline in making improvements.
“It was awesome having everyone compete,” he said. “It was fun. For the men, that was the first ever full team meet (since the 1990s).”
Looking ahead, in the Great American Conference (GAC), the women posted a notable fifth-place finish outdoors last year. Indoor conference seeding has yet to be determined.
The next meeting for the men’s team will take place on Saturday, at Pittsburg State University, Kansas. The women will be travelling to Wichita State University.
