Students in the business and professional communication class are shuffling to their seats while Robert Lawhon sits in the back, scanning his iPad, not saying a word.

“In class, I show up, keep to myself and learn from listening,” said Robert Lawhon, a current grad student and member of the baseball team at Northwestern.

In class he is always quiet, but when he steps out on the field for game time, Lawhon’s true personality shows.

“I enjoy playing baseball because I excel at it, unlike in the classroom where I seem to just do well,” Lawhon said.

As Lawhon fires in his pitches to the catcher, he is dynamic. He is aggressive, and oftentimes, if a pitch is just off the mark, he becomes aggravated.

He gets heated because that’s the competitor in him.

Lawhon said he strives to be the best player because he has big dreams of landing on a professional baseball team after his time in college is up.

As of now, said he has the Cleveland Indians, Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers and the San Francisco Giants looking at him for a post-college career.

Besides focusing on baseball, Lawhon also strives to pursue the development of his entrepreneurship qualities with his small online business selling shoes.

“If I manage only a short career playing ball, then I want to invest in stocks and find a financial adviser so he can help me in making more money,” Lawhon said. “The last thing I want to do is just show up to work. I want to enjoy the work that I am doing.”
