When we were kids, we did everything we could to avoid food that was the color green. Our parents would tell us it will help us grow big and tall, but we weren’t sure if that alone was worth it. I am here to tell you that five servings of vegetables, or a simple salad a day, can keep you from having stress, and anxiety. When students are stressed we often resort to foods that can be bad for us like, potato chips, or ice cream. We hope that after eating something that tastes salty, greasy, or sweet, it will help us feel better, but these are actually the worst things that you can put in your body in times of stress.
According to the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, fatty foods thicken our blood, and make us feel tired, while vegetables are high in antioxidants, and can boost our immune system. Sugar is high in carbohydrates, but unfortunately, cake does not make the world go around. Sugar carbohydrates enter and leave the blood stream rapidly, causing that “crash” that a person feels a few hours after their latte. When you’re studying for an exam, substitute a bag of Doritos for some raw celery. Instead of a monster energy drink, definitely consider a cup of black coffee, or peppermint tea. At moderation, don’t be afraid to enjoy a bowl of chocolate ice cream……with some peas on the side.
