“12 Strong” tells the true story following the U.S. Special Forces team that were the first to be deployed in Afghanistan after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
This movie is more than just the tale of the soldiers and their mission.
Despite some seeing this as just another true story war flick, 12 Strong shows the closeness and the brotherly bond not only between the U.S. soldiers but between them and the Afghani rebels. It can be seen throughout the film as there is little to no trust between the 2 nations but as time goes on, the forces begin to see each other as equals with a common goal.
The film also implements the difference between being a soldier versus being a warrior. Chris Hemsworth and his Special Forces team are described as soldiers who associated victory with life and will only go into battle if there is assurance that they will win.
However, the Afghani rebels consider themselves to be warriors who do not fear death and will even go into battle when there is no chance of winning.
The film, however, does have its fair share of problems. Not all of the main characters get fully fleshed out. The big names such as Hemsworth, Michael Peña, and Michael Shannon are able to develop their characters with their family lives back home as well as their inner demons. But the other members receive little to no development through the entire film.
12 Strong is absolutely a movie worth seeing. While it’s not the greatest war-flick out there, it definitely does a good job of telling the true story of the horse soldiers and their role as the first Special Forces team to be deployed following the attacks of 9/11.
