On Thursday, April 24, Bahama breakaway ended abruptly due to a tornado that had touched down 15 miles west of Alva in Freedom. Students were advised to get to their safe place until further notice.

In the dorms, students sat in the hall, which is a central room for all dorms and built with cement walls. This place was the safe spot for most students that live on campus.

The storm continued to build, heading straight east for approximately 15 minutes. The tornado continued to lift, gain more moment, and then touch back down again on and off all night.

The storm eventually turned to the south east, splitting between Alva and Dacoma.

Waynoka got hit with heavy rain and a small hail.

Aside from Freedom being touched with a tornado, Waynoka got the worst of the storm in out area.

Alva got approximately 0.46 inches of rain.

Although, it seemed as though the area got a much greater because it came in very heavily for about 30 minutes.

The winds were high at the same time. For this reason, the rain did not soak into the ground and left the streets flooded with mud and sticks that had broken off from the trees.

Anytime there is severe weather, it is important to remain calm and be aware.

Always have a plan for a safe spot should the weather turn in a direction it is going to hit where you are. It is also advised to have a go bag, full of protein bars, water, and an extra set of clothes.

Also, charge your phone and attempt to stay off of it during storms so that you can call in case of an emergency!

NWOSU’s top priority is that all students remain safe in all situations.
