Over the past couple of semesters, there has been talk of a fraternity potentially starting back up at Northwestern. The only fraternity offered here was shut down almost two years ago now. But would rekindling the flame be something that this campus really wants, or would it be another pathetic attempt at making a few kids popular?
I am probably one of the few people that think a fraternity would bring more life into the NWOSU campus. With two sororities here in Alva, it is long overdue that Greek life expands for the men, but only if it is done properly.
What does that really mean? Well like any club or organization, for it to thrive we must have the support of our school and our community. Because Alva is such a small and tight-knit town, if word gets around that there is a fraternity of unruly boys that bring disgrace to NWOSU, there is no way a Greek chapter can survive. A true fraternity knows the value of service and teamwork. That’s the kind of vibe that should be given off so that instead of the citizens of this town looking down on a potential frat, they would warm up to the idea of having young men that are willing to be of aid.
“But what about all the fun stuff like in ‘Animal House?’” That is one of the questions that will probably be asked a lot by potential brothers. Well the answer is simple. As a famous rapper once said, “Work hard, play hard”. There is a time and a place for everything. And I’m sure along the road that a fraternity in Alva would have plenty of fun times, but that only comes after performing the obligations set on the frat by the Greek administration and the school. Trust me, there will be fun to be had.
As far as the social aspect of having a Greek community for men, there will finally be a place where guys can come together and be close to one another without the rivalries that are always present between the sports teams. A fraternity would transcend those petty feuds. There is also the possibility of social mixers with the sororities on campus. I can’t speak for the women in that organization, but it seems to me that it would be a great idea to intermingle and plan events together.
So yes, I am one of the few that believes in a fraternity that is not just about partying but also about service and brotherhood. That is the only way it would ever work for such a small town like Alva. Who knows? Maybe someone awesome will pick it back up.
