Ranger Homecoming has many traditions, one of which is Freshman Queen.
Freshman Queen has been an NWOSU tradition since 2003.However, in 2020 they did not crown a new queen due to COVID-19.
This year, the Freshman Queen is Abby Guffy from Byron, Oklahoma. Guffy is involved with the BCM and works in the housing office. In her free time, she likes to play and watch sports and hang out with friends and family.
Guffy said she was encouraged by her friends at work in the housing office to run for freshman queen because she knows a lot of people at Northwestern and at the time no one was running.
She said her biggest challenge coming to NWOSU is that it is a different school as she has gone to Cherokee from Kindergarten to 12th grade. So being in a different atmosphere is a little strange to her.
Guffy said if she had a super power she would like to teleport.
“I am always super busy, then I could get to places super quickly,” Guffy said.
If she could travel anywhere in the world Guffy said she would like to visit Germany because she wants to see the castles and has family from there.
Guffy said her favorite place on campus to go to study is the student center. While it can get loud in there at times, she prefers it to be a little loud rather than it being totally quiet like the library is most of the time.
“I love the small school atmosphere and how close everyone is here,” Guffy said about Northwestern.
Saturday the rest of the Ranger royalty will be crowned during halftime of the football game.
“Being selected as Ranger Queen was my proudest moment and favorite memory so far,” last year’s Ranger queen Carli Seabolt said. “Not because I won the crown, but because over my four years interacting with the student body I have cultivated many genuine friendships and when they called my name as homecoming queen it confirmed every emotion I felt about connecting with the student body along with the overall impact I had made on this campus.”
This year’s three finalists for Ranger Queen are senior vocal music education major, Emily Smith, from Holdenville, Chloe Lehr, sophomore elementary education major, from Alva and Ally Meek sophomore, health and sports science major, from Enid.
The three finalists for Ranger King are Draven Hildago, music performance major from Hooker, Brayden Stoner agriculture education major from Arkansas City, Kansas and Gilberto Ramos freshman from Alva majoring in nursing.
“I have always been a shy person before coming to school,” last years Ranger king Fernando Nunez said. “Winning Ranger king brought my confidence up and helped me make a name for myself.”
