While all students are facing major changes to their schooling schedules, those with children at home are now facing balancing their own homework while homeschooling their school-aged children.
Alva Public Schools have resorted to alternative teaching methods, including zoom meetings and online assignments. These methods require attention and assistance from the parents.
Students at all grade levels are expected to keep up with their schooling in hopes of preventing regression within their learning.
Tasha Swallow, a NWOSU senior nursing student, has four children at home during the pandemic.
Swallow has been homeschooling her children with the help of her mother-in-law, who is a retired teacher. Swallow, along with many others, are trying to balance their own schoolwork while continuing their children’s educations.
Swallow said she recommends making a schedule, but keeping it flexible.
“Ask for help when you need it, do what you can and show yourself some grace when you don’t get everything done,” Swallow said.
While this is a stressful time for parents and students, it is important that they keep the end goal in mind and attempt to keep some type of schedule for themselves and their children.
Swallow said she has experienced some anxiety during this time.
“I’ve had anxiety from so much on my plate, not having time to do as much schooling with my children as they need because I needed to do my homework as well and keep up with my two year old,” Swallow said.
NWOSU students who are parents should do their best during this time and ensure that they keep in touch with the professors. Swallow suggests that students stay honest during this time as professors are willing and ready to work with students who are in unique situations.
Students who may need additional resources during this time should reach out to their professors, advisors or student services. There are many resources online for parents learning to educate their children at home.
