Northwestern Oklahoma State University’s two sororities have held a few recruitment nights, dubbed “Greek Nights,” since the fall semester began. The Northwestern News sat down with leaders from each sorority to ask them why they feel sororities are good for female students.

Q: Why do you like being in a sorority?

A: I like it because it does give you a sisterhood. The other day, I was having a hard day, and I called my sisters for advice.

Q: What are the benefits of being in a sorority?

A: The benefit is that you do get a lasting “sisterhood” and friends forever. … If you go to a job interview and they see that you are a part of a sorority, they will know that you have leadership skills. [Being in a sorority] makes you accountable to your academics.

A: The sisterhood is great, and it really does hold you accountable. We have study hours, so we make sure you’re going to class and making good grades. I came here from eastern Oklahoma, so I had no idea who anyone was out here, so I joined. It really is just a great support system.

Q: What are the benefits of being in a sorority?

A: You get a lot of service opportunities, which is cool if you want to go into that kind of field. You get a lot of service hours with national organizations and local ones as well. [For example], we get to go and do stuff for [the Special Olympics]. We volunteer too, so that is something that I consider to be a “plus” of being in a sorority. You’re helping your community.
