Northwestern football battled with Henderson State on Saturday at home but fell 25-17.
If you left before half time, you probably assumed Northwestern was going to be swept.
However, the 100 yard touchdown by Henderson’s Corey Chappell did not discourage our Ranger players.
Northwestern fought throughout the entire game; past the five interceptions and four sacks on quarterback Reid Miller.
In the first three quarters, Henderson dominated the playing field.
The Reddies defense filled every hole and covered every receiver.
Northwestern offense had a tough time breaking through that defensive line. However, Henderson was facing the same issues.
Ranger defense was immovable. Devin Peyton, alone, had 19 total tackles for the game. Jacoby Beasley and Derrick Thompson both had crucial tackles during the game; Reddie quarter backs didn’t know what hit them.
Henderson ended up scoring three touchdowns and had an unimpressive 25 yard field goal in the first three quarters before Ranger football caught their wind in the final quarter.
Northwestern’s Jordan Norris, got the Rangers fired up after intercepting a Henderson pass by Dallas Hardison, late in the fourth quarter. Norris ran the ball for a 22 yard touchdown!
The field goal, by Will Hawkins, was good and that fueled the Rangers’ fire.
Northwestern continued with a passing game and, starting quarter back, Reid Miller, threw a bullet to Arte’ Miura Jr. for a whopping 55 yard touchdown.
Unfortunately, Miller’s last heave down field ended up in the arms of a Henderson defender.
The late interception resulted in Henderson taking 25-17 the victory over the Red-and-Black.
If you were to ask me, the Rangers had an impressive game. They only allowed Henderson to score 10 points.
Reddie special teams and rushing yards are what inevitably lead Henderson State to a victory.
The Rangers (1-2, 1-2) next outing is Saturday at 7 p.m. in Arkadelphia, Ark. as they face the conference foe, Ouachita Baptist Tigers.
