Preston Ewing led the Northwestern Oklahoma State University to a top five finish Tuesday at the Washburn Invitational at the Topeka Country Club in Topeka, Kan.
Entering Tuesday’s final round in seventh after posting scores of 75 and 73 on Monday, Ewing fired a 69 to move up four spots on the leaderboard to finish tied for third place, one shot out of second place, to start the spring season strong. Ewing was one of four golfers to fire a tournament low round of 69, which also tied him for the fourth lowest round in NWOSU program history.
Four Rangers improved their scores from the day one to day two, including Tyler Berryhill (80-78-75), who finished with a three-round total of 233, and Colten Person (81-78-75=239). Ben Baker had the best improvement from the opening round Monday morning to his final round as he shot a 72 Tuesday to finishing the event with a score of 240 (85-83-72).
Ewing was two-under in the event on par fives for the second best score among the participants, while Berryhill finished one-under. The junior, Ewing, also finished second in the field with 10 birdies in the three rounds.
Other golfers competing for the Rangers in the tournament were Parker Rehorn (83-78-84=245), Collin Stork (76-79-79=234) and Juangui Angarita (82-82-88=252).
Washburn retained the individual title in its home event. The Rangers finished the tournament with a team score of 922 for fifth place, leaping Southwestern Baptist in the standings in the final round.
The Rangers golfers were successful in the Rockhurst Invitational.
The men won and the women placed fourth.
Both men and women golfers next tee off in the Dallas Baptist Patriot Class on April 1.
