Sophomore Cole Ward fired a season low 71 during an otherwise abysmal performance for the Ranger golfers.

In a tournament where low scoring seemed to be easy to come by, the Rangers could not match the rest of the field finishing in last place.

The tournament was hosted by St. Mary’s University on March 14-15 at The Golf Club of Texas in San Antonio, Texas. The tournament featured four teams ranked in the top 50 in division two golf, as well as a top-10 ranked division three team and the top ranked junior college team in the nation.

The Rangers shot rounds of 326, 317 and 309. Ward’s 71 helped him lead the way for the Rangers, finishing with a three-day total of 230.

Freshman Tyler Miller continued his consist play with two rounds in the 70’s to finish with a total of 239. Upperclassman Trevor Montgomery, Drew Sims and Ryan Shumaker continued to stuggle and rounded out the team.

Ward’s season-low score for the Rangers of 71 featured three birdies to go along with just two bogeys. The other bright spot from the Rangers turned out to be Montgomery’s remarkable turnaround on the first day of competition when in the first round he shot 93, but then came back in the afternoon round and fired a 76.

A similar turnaround is obviously needed for the whole team as the other two conference teams dominated the Rangers. Indian Hills Junior College took home the team trophy finishing at an impressive 13-under par 851.

The Rangers have just a few weeks to figure something out as they will head to Fort Smith, Ark., on April 11-12 to compete in the Hardscrabble Open at Hardscrabble Country Club.
