He walks the halls of the science building, smiling big, saying few words and subtly head bobbing “hello” to fellow students.

Fifi Neizgr-Ashun, a junior at Northwestern Oklahoma State University, spends most of his time working on becoming what he has always dreamed of: a neurosurgeon.

There were many things in his life to lead him to where he is today. He is currently a biology major with hopes of going to medical school after he graduates from Northwestern.

Accra, Ghana was where he called home until he moved to America in 2013. According to him, Ghana is more strict and doesn’t let people express their intelligence or talents quite as freely as America. For him, Alva has been a completely different experience compared to large cities he has lived in his whole life.

At age 12, his interest in neurosurgery was sparked due to a close friend of his dying from a brain condition called hydrocephalus. It was obvious for him that he would need to pursue his dreams away from Ghana. He said some of his first thoughts were Hedrix College, Herderson State or Marshalltown, but Alva caught his eye with its smaller class sizes and small town feel.

Just like all of us, he juggles school, work and homework. He traveled across countries to follow a childhood dream and make it into a reality.
