In this the age of nostalgia that we live in, it’s common for nearly any form of media from the last twenty years to get a reboot or continuation. Anything from Hey, Arnold to Charlie’s Angels have been getting this treatment from Hollywood, and the next on their list would be Invader Zim.
The Invader Zim franchise had lain dormant for over a decade after its original Nickelodeon show ended in 2006.
Because of this, it was to both my shock and excitement when Netflix announced that they would be making a new Invader Zim movie.
Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus was a complete throwback to the early 2000’s era it came from. Being worked on by much of the same original staff led by creator Jhonen Vasquez, Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus maintains almost all the charm that the original show had.
Part of this is thanks to all the characters having their original voice actors, and the art and humor staying true to its source material.
The original show gained much of its charm from its unusually timed humor and creative art style, and though the art style has been tweaked ever so slightly, there were many times when I forgot that it was a movie and not just a new episode of the series.
Because it has been thirteen years since the end of the show, the movie begins with a slight retelling of the original plot that then leads straight into the story and wastes no time in throwing things off the rails…in a familiar fashion.
The plot of the movie, and the plot of the show are almost one in the same.
Invader Zim tries to conquer Earth with the help of his robot companions Gir and MiniMoose while his arch enemy Dib and his sister Gaz try to foil him.
While the plot has always been there, it’s never really been the strongest part of Invader Zim.
Though not for everyone, Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus is a fun throwback to early 2000’s Nickelodeon with one of the most entertaining cast of characters this side of Rick and Morty.
If you ever watched Invader Zim as a kid, or just enjoy situational comedy I would highly recommend Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus. That’s why I give it 4 out of 5 stars.
