Student athletes traded jerseys for dress clothes at the Northwespys Monday, a night of celebration honoring standout performances and unforgettable moments in Ranger athletics.
The Northwespys is an annual event at the end of each academic year to honor athletes, teams, and coaches for their success over the year. Some of the awards given are athletes of the year for both female and male, sportsmanship award, scholar athlete, scholar team, coach of the year, fan of the year and a couple others. This event is to recognize all of the teams and athletes’ hard work and dedication they put into their sports every single day. The event started with a social in the student center ballroom and then moved on over to the ceremony which was in Herod Hall in the theatre. Baseball was a huge standout as they won many athletes of the year for the specific grades, and they also won coach of the year and scholar of the year. Women’s basketball also got a lot of recognition, winning a couple awards as a team and individually as well.
Track and field athletes were also awarded for individual performances as well as women’s golf, women’s soccer, softball and rodeo.
The overall female athlete of the year was Ashley Low from track and field, but she also participated in volleyball and softball.
The male athlete of the year was Cam Mcdowell from the men’s basketball team. Cam is a standout player and had a standout year on the court. The fan of the year was Rick Brown who is an Alva local and a strong supporter of all Northwestern athletics.
This event is special for athletes to be able to attend and be recognized because being an athlete can be challenging in many ways.
It is always nice to step away from the field or court and put on a nice outfit with all your friends and teammates and celebrate all of ranger athletics.
