The Northwestern Oklahoma State University Rodeo will be kicking off at 7:00 PM tonight and continue until Saturday, Oct. 29.
The rodeo will be located at the Alva Dome on E0160 Rd. The event list contains the following: Bull Riding, Cowgirl’s Barrel Racing, Cowgirl’s Breakaway Roping, Goat Tying, Saddle Bronc Riding, Steer Wrestling, Team Roping and Tie Down Roping.
The 2023 NWOSU Rodeo is also a part of the Central Plains Region College Rodeo Tour.
“I’m pretty proud of everyone so far this season,” said Stockton Graves, the Head Rodeo Coach at NWOSU, when speaking about the members of the rodeo team.
Graves mentioned that although they haven’t won a rodeo as a team yet this season, they are sitting in the top three of several events. He also said they have crowned many champions this season in bulldogging, calf roping and breakaway roping.
“So far this season has been great,” said Trisyn Kalawaia, a senior majoring in agribusiness at NWOSU and a member of the rodeo team. “It’s been fun.”
Kalawaia, who competes in steer wrestling, won the first and third rodeo of the season the team competed at, and placed second at the second rodeo. This weekend will be the NWOSU Rodeo Team’s fourth rodeo to compete at this season.
Kalawaia said his goal at every rodeo is to make a good run and to place well. He also said he hopes to make the college finals at the end of the year.
Kalawaia said it’s a cool experience to compete at home and see friends from the region.
“I take it one rodeo at a time and hope to perform well at each one,” Kalawaia said.
