For the second straight week the Rangers made the long drive across the state of Oklahoma into central Arkansas for a match with yet another quality opponent.
This week’s opponent Henderson State would give the Rangers their second straight loss with a final score of 62-23, moving them to 1-2 overall record. The Reddies are ranked eighth in Division 2 football and put the pressure on the Rangers early and often.
The Rangers were once again unable to put together any sort of productive offense against the Reddies stifling defense, which had only given up 18 points in the first two games of the season. The Rangers began the game with six straight three-and-outs on offense, and by the time the Rangers finally did put points on the board, the Reddies had already scored 38 points.
The Rangers were held without a first down until midway through the second quarter, and it wasn’t until defensive back Shane Collins intercepted a ball in Reddies territory that the Rangers were able to run a play in Henderson State territory. Field conditions seemed to be a major factor throughout the ball game as many plays came to a halt when players slipped on the field and were visibly frustrated.
Despite the poor offensive performance, the long road trip and the terrible field conditions, the Rangers did leave Arkadelphia with a few positives. First and foremost they scored more points against a nationally-ranked Henderson State defense in one game than their first two opponents could manage in two games combined.
Even though the offense as a whole continued to struggle, sophomore standout receiver Horatio Smith continued to shine with eight receptions for 84 yards and a touchdown. He ranks in the top ten nationally in all-purpose yards and continues to be a threat every time he touches the ball.
Two weeks removed from a poor performance against Arkansas-Monticello, the Rangers defense has incorporated many new faces that have seemed to make a positive impact including freshman Maurice Wright Jr., who was a part of 11 tackles as well as a forced fumble in the ball game.
Northwestern will return to the friendly confines of Alva, Okla. this weekend where they will take on Ouachita Baptist with kick-off slated for 7 p.m.
