The Northwestern softball team’s Great American Conference play has begun.
The Lady Rangers are 5-5 on the season so far, and they played two games Sunday at 1 p.m. back-to-back in Monticello, Arkansas. They lost 11-7 in the first game and 8-0 in the second game.
The Lady Rangers did not prevent the sweep, as they lost the final game of the series, 5-4.
In the first game, Abby DeTar and Hannah Howell led the Rangers with two hits each. Six players had hits in the second.
Howell and Morgan La Neve led the team in the first game with two RBIs.
La Neve is the third baseman for the Lady Rangers, and she said she is hopeful and excited for the softball season.
“Our coach is a really good coach. He transformed his last school from a losing team to a winning team,” La Neve said.
She said the volunteer coach and assistant coaches are nice additions to the team as well.
La Neve said she wants the Lady Rangers to win more games and solidify the defense.
La Neve said once they get both the hitting and defense down, nothing will stop them from going to the Great American Conference tournament.
Ryan Wondrasek, Northwestern’s head softball coach, said the Lady Rangers are doing well despite the weather getting in the way and causing cancellations.
Wondrasek’s favorite memory of the season so far is that two of the five wins from the Lady Rangers have been walk-off home runs. He also said the first game of the season ended with a walk-off triple.
Wondrasek said he wants the team to continue improving the defense, pitching and hitting as the season goes on.
“We are looking to continue to improve and clean up some of our game,” Wondrasek said. “That way, as when we get into our conference play, we can really make a run and make a push in the Great American Conference.”
