The Northwestern Oklahoma State football team traveled to Durant this weekend to take on the Savage Storm of Southeastern Oklahoma State and came away with a tough 55-34 loss.
Runningback Jacob Peyton had a big day where he led the way on the ground for the Rangers, rushing for 136 yards, a personal best so far this season. Not only did he rush for over 100 yards, he also took it to the house twice on the day.
Reid Miller tossed two touchdown passes on the afternoon, bringing his touchdown count on the season to 20 through six games.
Lorenzo Rosario and Riley Hess each collected touchdown receptions on the day with the other touchdown going to freshman Jalen Williams.
Shane Collins was the leading man on defense as he collected 12 tackles on the afternoon, one of which was for loss.
Seven times during the game, the Savage Storm sacked Miller, making it difficult on the senior quarterback.
Both teams got off to a quick start through the first quarter, they scored a combined 17 points with the Savage Storm gaining the slight advantage, 10-7.
Northwestern took a short-lived lead in the second quarter, going up 14-10, but two quick scores by SOSU gave the Savage Storm a 10-point advantage going into the break.
Coming out of halftime, Northwestern went for a gutsy onside kick, but was negated on an offside penalty on the Rangers, giving the ball to Southeastern.
The first drive of the hosts took up half of the third quarter and ended in a score, making it 31-14 Savage Storm, but just 44 seconds later, the Rangers were back on the board, to put the score at 31-21.
The two teams traded hits after that, and the third quarter ended at 37-28 in favor of the home team.
Two more back and forth touchdowns by the two teams made it a one-score advantage for Southeastern, but that’s as close as the Rangers could get it before SOSU took a commanding lead after two more scores, making it 55-34 where the game would finish.
Northwestern will hit the road for the second straight week. At 2 p.m on Saturday they will play the Oklahoma Baptist Bison in Shawnee.
