Elizabeth “Liz” Dwyer sets herself and focuses on the volleyball being hit across the net. She’s waiting for her moment to block and spike it to score a point, as a right-side hitter for the Northwestern Volleyball Team.
Dwyer is from Wichita, Kansas, and has played for the team for the past two seasons. The multi-sport athlete isn’t only accomplished on the court though; in high school she played for the varsity softball team all four years. She was the starting first baseman and also was a fourth place medalist in her senior year.
Dwyer said it was a hard decision picking between volleyball and softball but had to play volleyball and that’s how she decided.
A rare fact about Dwyer is that while she is so accomplished in these well-known sports, she is also an accomplished bowler.
“I joined the bowling team at my high school when I was a freshman,” Dwyer said. “I was hesitant to do it, but my mom convinced me to do it. I had never competitively bowled ever, so each year I would practice and practice and get better. When I was a junior, I placed fifth in the city, 10th in the region, and 13th in the state. It is still a hobby of mine, and it was one of the best decisions I made in my life to be on the team.”
She is majoring in psychology and minoring in substance abuse. Once finished at Northwestern, she plans to go to graduate school and receive her doctorate, with the hopes of opening her own practice one day to counsel people.
Dwyer is also involved on campus, being a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority as the secretary.
