It is that time of the year again, the time of year where you hear a lot of swooshes, screaming for the ball, whistles blowing, and the oooo and ahhh’s from the crowd. That is right, I am talking about intramural basketball is back on for another year at Northwestern ladies and gentlemen.
John Wood, a participant of intramural basketball, said “Intramural basketball is a fun way to get involved in college and a good opportunity to meet a lot of new people.”
Dylan Painter said “Overall it is a fun league with one outstanding referee named Don Holly.”
For those who were competitors in high school, and want to get back into the flow of the game this is second closest thing to playing at a high level again. Northwestern offers a wide variety of intramural sports for students and community can participate in, but softball and basketball seem to the most consistently favored of the sports said Chris Lauderdale, director of intramural sports.
“This year in basketball, between men’s and women’ leagues, we had 22 teams sign up,” Lauderdale said. The maximum number is 24, so numbers are high for basketball this year, as they are right on the edge of max teams.
Lauderdale also said volleyball, dodgeball, and flag football have all seen a drop in student participation over the past couple years. That does not mean more these numbers cannot change within the next few years.
Communication to students is key and Lauderdale has done just that. He and assistant intramural director, Brody Nichols, encourage students and or players to come and talk to them about new ideas or sports at any time to make the intramural experience better than it already is.
The next sport that will be offered is co-ed softball. Lauderdale is planning to have meetings leading up to spring break and get right into the playing when we return. There will be flyers posted throughout the campus regarding signups for softball teams, so be on the lookout.
