Do you know how hard it is to watch at least one scary movie every day for the month of October? You wouldn’t think it would be that hard to find a few hours at the end of the day, but let me tell you, it wasn’t easy. With that in mind, let’s take a look at my top movies and one series that I made it through this month.
- The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
Let’s start with the series, shall we? 10 hours of family drama, demons and secrets, creepy ghosts hidden in the shadows and one of the most compelling storylines I’ve watched in the past few years. This was my second time watching this series through and I would gladly do it again. - Hereditary (2018)
This movie is insane. The twists in this movie come out of nowhere and are so shocking you almost don’t believe what is happening. In almost every scene there is a tenseness that you can’t shake, but you’re not sure why you’re so unsettled. Ari Aster did an amazing job with this film as his directorial debut and I can’t wait to see what else he has in store. - IT (2017)
I talk about this movie all the time. My friends hate it. But “IT” is one of my favorite films regardless of what movie genre it belongs to. I love the atmosphere the movie sets right from the beginning, an atmosphere and tone which is present through the entire film, this pressing feeling doesn’t let up, not even after the credits roll. The sound effects and score are used effectively and even the jumpscares, which I’m not a huge fan of, were enjoyable. 10 out of 10 would (and have) watch(ed) again. - The Babadook (2014)
I remember hearing quite a few good things about “The Babadook” when it first came out in 2014, so I decided to watch it five years later. I can appreciate what the film was trying to achieve by equating the Babadook with grief, but honestly, I just got confused and had to read what the whole point of the movie was online later that night. It was a very unsettling movie though and, at one point, a jumpscare startled me so bad that I had to take a break before continuing with the second half of the film. - 1922 (2017)
Now, I didn’t find “1922” to be scary at all, but I did like how they chose to “haunt” the main character with the choices he made. He has ghosts that he will always have to deal with, no matter how he might think he has taken care of his problems. If you’re not looking to be terrified, but wouldn’t mind being sufficiently spooked, “1922” may be just the film for you.
And there you have it! At least 18 hours and 35 minutes of what I consider quality horror entertainment. Some of you may like the selection, and some of you may not, but you can’t say you don’t have anything to watch this spooky season.
