THE TURBO RANGER- Joshua Christopher
With regionals on the horizon, the cross-country team members are hitting their stride, fueled by a season of record-breaking races week in and week out.
Coach Sterling Broomfield, a key factor behind the team’s success, approached the season with high expectations for him and his team.
Broomfield said: “I believe they did a great job preparing for the season during the summer. They all came in head strong and ready to put in the work during the school year.”
This high active sport is no slouch when it comes to being intentional with workouts and recovery. Broomfield said preparation is imperative in a sport like this.
“It is important that they put in the work during the summer because the season is not long enough for them to get into shape and make progress that is needed to compete at a high level,” he said.
Both the men and women have demonstrated exceptional performances, consistently placing at the top in various meets throughout the season. As a staff, they expect the most out of their athletes on and off the trails.
Broomfield said: “I expect them to make sure that they go to class every day and turn in all of their homework on time. They need to make sure that they are early everywhere they go, and I believe that if they are successful in the classroom then they will be successful running wise.”
Coaching at a high level and seeing success from his athletes is a joy for coach Broomfield, and his “why” lines up with the philosophy carried out into the sport.
“My ‘why’ is all the athletes that I work with because at the end of the day, it’s all about them,” Broomfield said. “I tell them that their education and being here at Northwestern is bigger than me. I am just here to help mold them into grown individuals getting ready for the real world.”
With the regular season ending this past weekend, Coach feels the runners ended on a high note and are ready to run into regionals with some momentum. He is satisfied with what he has seen these past meets yet eager for more.
Broomfield emphasized: “I believe the season went pretty well. We broke some school records and made a lot of history throughout the season.
“We have regionals in a couple of weeks to determine if we have anyone making it to nationals.”
The cross-country team will be preparing for the NCAA Central Regional Championship on Nov. 4 in Joplin, Missouri.
