A scholarship is available for The George and Donna Nigh Leadership Scholarship Academy March 13-17 in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Anyone attending must be an Oklahoma resident and  have graduated from an Oklahoma high school. Students should fill out an application and attach a current photo ID suitable for publishing and a brief autobiography. President Janet Cunningham will select one student from Northwestern who demonstrates leadership qualities and community involvement.

After the Nigh Academy receives the selected application, it will contact the student to insure a smooth and successful experience.  Lodging, meals, and local ground transportation will be paid by the academy.

The Nigh Academy was set up in honor of former Gov. George Nigh and his wife, Donna.  This is its 17th year.     The Academy was established by former Gov. Frank Keating in 1999 to honor the Nighs’ contribution to public service.

It includes presentations from community and business leaders on the future of Oklahoma. Participants also will experience the government in action at the state Capitol.  The academy gives college students the opportunity to meet state leaders, business leaders and academic scholars while visiting several places around the Capitol area.

Rita Castleberry, Northwestern’s director of financial aid and scholarships, said, “This is a great scholarship for students, because it requires no certain GPA and it’s for students in any major.”

Students who complete the five days of the academy and attend all activities  will be rewarded with a $1,000 scholarship for the spring semester. To qualify,  the selected student must attend all activities for the entire Academy; if a student misses an activity he will forfeit the scholarship.

Scholarship applications are available from the NWOSU Financial Aid Office, located in Herod Hall room 113. All applications are due at the close of business Oct 21. For more information about the scholarship students can contact Castleberry at 580-327-8540 or by email at rjcastleberry@nwosu.edu. Students can also contact the director of the Nigh Academy, Carl Reherman, at 405-818-0414 or through email at carlreherman@gmail.com
