ChoirNorthwestern choral groups performed a concert Monday, but it wasn’t all just singing,  there was plenty of audience participation as well.

Overseer of the Music Education program, Irene Messoloras, conducted the choral arrangements, performed in Alva First United Methodist Church.

The program’s theme was “Trivial Pursuit,” with TV-inspired games including “Jeopardy” and “Deal or No Deal. ”  The music varied from “Liebeslieder Waltzes Op. 52” by Johannes Brahms to “Shake it Off” by Taylor Swift.

The purpose behind the theme was to involve the crowd in the performance. Tickets were given to each person who attended; throughout the program tickets were drawn for participation to play in the games.

“I wanted to give the audience an interactive experience while keeping the integrity of a traditional choir concert,” said Messoloras. “I thought a game show night would be a fun way to involve everyone.”

Each game had its own set of rules and prizes. For instance, the individual’s ticket that was drawn during “Wheel Of Fortune” would go to the stage and spin the wheel. Their prize would depend on where the marker landed.

According to Messoloras, all feedback received about the performance was positive and encouraging.

“This by far was my favorite concert due to the fact that it involved the crowd,” said audience attendee Mazy Murray. “Dr. Messoloras really went out of the box with this one.”

During the concert, the audience was given the opportunity to make a tax-deductible donation to Friends of NWOSU Choral Activities. The donations help to fund an upcoming choir trip to New York City, where the choir was invited to perform at Carnegie Hall.

“The students continue to exceed my expectations,” said Messoloras. “I feel lucky to have such a committed ensemble that is so passionate about musical performance.”

The next opportunity to attend a choir concert will be the Holiday Spectacular at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 6 in the Herod Hall Auditorium.
