Natalie’s Review-

2.5 sea shells out of 5

Ohhhhhhh Whatttttt movie did we get to see for free?!

SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS!

What movie was absorbingly decent but not that funny?!

SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS!

If lame puns and nonsense be something you wish!

SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS

Then come to this film, it flopped like a fish!

SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS

Ah Spongebob Squarepants. The world’s most famous sponge. Don’t get me wrong, I love to indulge in a couple of episodes of mindless humor every now and then. I love the SHOW “Spongebob Squarepants.” That being said, there’s a reason this show excels in a 30-minute time slot. It does not, however, fare so well in a movie. “The Spongebob Movie: Sponge out of Water” is an hour and 40 minutes long. It’s about forty minutes longer than it needs to be. The content and storyline of this film could have easily fit into two television episodes. Because of this, the last 30 minutes just become long and tedious.

I assumed this might be the case, which is why Chris and I argued over what we would watch this week. However, Chris has been fan-girling like a 12-year-old about this film for months and taking that away from him seemed cruel. See, I’m not a monster.

Yes, this movie is funny. Or, should I say, punny. Now, I love puns. But it seemed as though any time the writers didn’t know what jokes to include, they went back to square pun. At first they were PUNchy, but eventually I just wanted to PUNch someone. There were no outrageously hilarious moments; the hysterical legacy of Spongebob was lost.

Though the switch in animation from traditional Spongebob to reality was neat, the 3D effect added little to the film. I would suggest you save a couple of dollars and just see this film in 2D.

Bottom Line: I’d recommend you stay at home and watch reruns of Spongebob instead.

Chris’ Review-

4.5 sea shells out of 5

So I loved spongebob as a kid. All those shenanigans were hilarious to a kid like me. But after a while, it got too stupid. Eventually, I just quit watching all together, but with the new release of a movie, I had to throw it old school. And I was not disappointed.

There is plenty of foolishness in this movie that will bring out the inner child in anyone who did some growing up in the last 20 years. There were also several other kinds of humor to really please everyone, whether you are laughing at Patrick’s butt or his puns, you will be holding your stomach.

Another thing about this movie that I loved was the various styles of animation used. The range went from 3D graphics to the retro Mickey Mouse style. Some effects were weird, like in a time travel sequence that must have been made with the influence of some strong drugs.

Bikini Bottom line (See what I did there?): If you want to see a movie about deception, sacrifices, pirates, time travel, and an epic rap battle between a space dolphin and talking seagulls, then definitely catch this flick. And if you don’t like it afterwards, you may want to take a good hard look in the mirror. You may be taking life too seriously.
