I have been here at Northwestern Oklahoma State University for three years now, and in those three years this campus has really grown on me since I was a freshman. I’ve heard many people talk about how much they dislike it here at Northwestern, but what I want to get across is that if you give this campus a chance then it can be a really great place to attend college.
I will admit when I first arrived in Alva I thought I made a mistake in the college I chose, and since I didn’t really know anyone here, I ended up regretting my decision to attend Northwestern. But I chose to at least give it one more semester before I gave up on this college, and the truth is I am very happy that I chose to stay here.
Things finally started looking up during the second semester of my freshman year because that’s when I met Tali and Micah. They turned out to be two of the best people I would ever know because they showed me the best of what Alva and Northwestern had to offer. The three of us would see great movies at the Rialto, go to the exciting games at Ranger Field and we even participated in the plays at the Herod Hall Auditorium. The best play I participated in was “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” which Tali directed for her senior show.
After a rough first semester I was finally living the stereotypical kind of college experience, complete with great friends and crazy misadventures like going to Enid to see a midnight movie with Tali and Micah the night before an 8 a.m. final. Another great aspect of the campus I noticed was how much history is behind this campus and how prestigious it is.
Since I’ve been here I had the privilege of taking classes with some really great teachers. The unique thing I noticed about the teachers at Northwestern is how talented and diverse many of them are. The teachers here are from all over the country; some of the teachers here have attended national conferences, are internationally known for their talents and all of them have a passion for teaching, which is something that is very hard to find at other colleges.
Another thing many students criticize are the dorms. Well, my first semester I really didn’t like the dorms either, but after a semester of getting used to them they’re really not that bad and Gretchen, the head RA, is really cool if you get to know her because no matter what you need she will help you adjust to living in the dorms and if you have any sort of problem she is more than happy to help you.
I guess the point of all this would be to say that if you have your doubts about Northwestern and are thinking about leaving or transferring, then just reconsider it and give it another semester or two. If you give this campus a chance then things will start looking up sooner than you think.
