Three years ago I transferred to Northwestern. I left the hectic life that I had at the University of Central Oklahoma because I wanted something a little calmer. Little did I know that I would get more than I bargained for.
Now, I knew Alva was small. I had visited this quant community once before as a freshman in High School for a marching band competition. The few memories I had of this place were anything but inspiring. To small. To quiet. To nothing.
I’m happy to say that after three years of living here, of making my life here, I was wrong. Now, sure, Alva is small and quiet. But it’s only boring if you make it boring. This town has gone out of its way to support Northwestern and to ensure that her students feel welcomed. What other college town do you know of that has a sales tax in place to help pay for scholarships?
Living in this town pushes you to grow, to use your imagination, and to break out of your comfort zone. The way Alva is designed, as a college town, but yet never losing its small town charm, incentivizes you to build new relationships and make new friendships. From the ladies who cut your hair at “The Wild Hair” Salon, to the servers who give you ice cream at Holders Pharmacy, you’ll never miss a good conversation and a friendly smile.
We appreciate the community of Alva, and the citizenry who go out of their way to make us students feel welcomed. Thank You.
