Northwestern has been a part of many big things in the past, and something some students are doing now might be the biggest yet.

Chris Punto, a sophomore, is starting a fraternity. If he is successful, this will be the only fraternity on campus, along with two sororities.

Punto has already made big strides in getting the endeavor off the ground. He held an info night in early April to gauge interest on who would want to join and 21 men attended the meeting.  Four additional men expressed interest  later.

With this larger number backing him, he contacted the national headquarters of the fraternity he is interested in bringing to campus, TKE, Tau Kappa Epsilon. While TKE headquarters were very hesitant in the beginning, due to failed attempts, Punto said they seemed supportive after a while.  Punto informed headquarters about the support he has received from faculty and campus members, as well as from the other members of Greek life here at NWOSU.

While a colony won’t be able to start up until next semester, Punto wants to keep the male student body interested and recruit more men in the fall. He hopes to have a booth set up at Freshman Orientation in the fall to spread the word that a fraternity is coming.

Punto said, “Overall I want this to be a great experience for everyone. I want all these guys to grow and learn from this fraternity, but definitely have fun doing it. It’ll be interesting to see what big thing comes next.”
