Northwestern Oklahoma State University’s rodeo team put on the Alva college rodeo this past weekend.
The women’s team finished the weekend third overall and the men’s team finished second overall. The Rangers had a competitor make it back to the short (championship) round in six of the nine events.
The only rough stock rider to make it back to the short round was Weston Wilson. who is a bull rider. In the long round he had a score of 60, and in the short round he unfortunately had a no-score. Wilson ended up sixth overall for the weekend.
In tie-down roping event, Northwestern had two cowboys make it back, Hayden Pearce and Maverick Harper. Pearce has a time of 9.0 in the long round and suffered a no-time in the short round. Pearce ended up splitting fourth for the weekend. Harper’s time of 10.6 in the long round brought him back to the short round, where he had a time of 10.5. leaving him ninth overall for the weekend.
In steer wrestling, JD Stuxness, Brock White and Grayson Allred made it back to the short round representing Northwestern. Struxness had a time of 4.1 in the long go and a time of 3.5 in the short go, which made him end up first overall for the weekend. White’s long go time was a 5.0 and he had a short go time of 4.0, finishing second overall. Allred had a long go time of 5.4 and a short go time of 7.1, which left him behind the pack in the overall standings.
In team roping, four Northwestern cowboys made it back to the short round — Wade Perry, Hayden Pearce, Dalton Richards and Stephen Culling. Perry and Pearce roped together with Pearce on the head side and Perry on the heel side and had a long go time of 6.7 and a short go time of 6.5, finishing fourth overall for the weekend. With Richards on the head side and Ben Whiddon from Southeastern Oklahoma State University on the heel side they had a time of 6.9 in the long round and a 10.9 in the short, round making them sixth overall for the weekend. Culling was on the head side for Dalton Davis of Southwestern Oklahoma State University and they ended up with a 7.2 in the long round and had a no-time in the short round.
In the women’s event of breakaway roping, Northwestern had three cowgirls make it to the short round. Shayna Miller had a time of 3.0 in the long round and a no-time in the short round. Karley Kile had a 2.4 in the long round and a 2.5 in the short round, leaving her first overall for the weekend. Taige Trent had a time of 2.3 in the long round and a 4.4 in the short round, finishing second overall for the weekend.
In goat tying, Shayna Miller, Elli Price and Karley Kile all represented Northwestern in the short round. Miller had a time of 7.6 in the long round and 8.5 in the short round, ending up 10th overall for the weekend. Price had a 7.5 in the long round and a 8.1 in the short round, finishing her weekend at seventh overall. Kile had a 7.0 in the long round and a no-time in the short round, leaving her sixth overall for the weekend.
Northwestern had contenders in both men’s and women’s all-around. Hayden Pearce was second in men’s all-around and Karley Kile was the women’s all-around champion.
Kile, a senior from Overbrook, Kans. majoring in biology, swept the breakaway roping, made it to the short round in goat tying, and was the all-around women’s champion of the rodeo. She said, “I felt great about my weekend. I finally stepped up on my roping. Kody brought an excellent pen of calves and I took advantage of them. I switched up goat tying horses because I wasn’t clicking with the other one and it really helped me win the long round. I didn’t draw a very good goat in my short round but my points from the long round helped me win the all-around. I always feel the home-court advantage in the Alva dome. Stockton and Kody do their best to prepare us by having jackpots and practice in there the week before the rodeo.”
