winter weather by osamSome of us beach bums wish we could go into hibernation, just like the big grizzly bears do. Unfortunately we cannot, so when the weather does get harsh in winter months, we should all be prepared. If anyone has had car troubles in harsh winter weather, you know what supplies are needed to make it until help comes and where the problem is fixed. First thing needed is a phone charger; always keeping a charger in your car so that if you do have problems, you can call for help immediately.

Like sweltering heat, low, bitter temperatures present a danger to our body. In frigid temps, it does not take long to cause harm to the body, or even freeze to death. Always keeping hand warmers and extra blankets in the vehicle is a way to be prepared for the bitter winter weather. In freezing temperatures, hypothermia can take up to 30 minutes to develop. Keeping an emergency kit for your vehicle should include other useful tools along with essentials for warmth. I have noticed when ice and snow are predicted, people carry cat litter. The cat litter is used for traction on the ice and snow for your vehicle.

Going to have your car battery checked is important because the cold is hard and wears on the car batteries, as well as your tires. It’s important to make sure you have the proper air pressure to avoid getting a flat. Another important factor to take into consideration is topping off the antifreeze along with all other fluids in your car; your antifreeze should be checked every year in the winter months. Proper maintenance during the winter months can save a headache and keep the wheels turning to get you home safely to the fireplace.

The home preparations are also important during the winter months. It’s always a good idea to keep the fridge and pantry stocked with food and water for the family. Canned foods are always great to keep around during winter months in case of a power outage. Another rule of thumb is leaving the faucets dripping to avoid frozen pipes, which can lead to costly plumbing repairs and the pain of not having running water. Buying gallons of water will come in handy to stock up in the case that you do not have running water. We have all grown accustomed to the luxuries of having electricity and cell phones at our fingertips so that we do stay warm or that if something in case of an emergency does happen, we can call for help right away. Being prepared is a big factor not only for your comfort, but also for your safety, health and wellbeing! So take heed to the tips given above, watch the weather forecast and be prepared for the bitter winter weather in and outside of your home!
