Severe winds and heavy rains rip through Alva several times a years.

At any point during the storms  that move through Alva, a tornado could touch town, causing serious damage to resident’s homes, the town business or schools.

To make sure you are prepared for tornadoes before they occur, ready.gov says you should build an emergency kit and make a family communication plan. It also says to listen to the NOAA weather radio or any local station. Being alert to changing weather conditions is also a tip they give to being prepared for a tornado.

In any circumstance that a tornado does touch down, everyone should take the following precautions according to accuweather.com: Take shelter in the lowest interior room, lie flat and use mattresses as cover if possible, and if in case your are driving, do not try to outrun the tornado. Instead, move from the path of the tornado in a right angle.
