Spirit Week is in full swing at Northwestern.
Festivities started Tuesday with a free movie night at the Rialto movie theatre. Students had the option to choose between “American Sniper,” “Paddington” and “The Wedding Ringer.” Freshman Elizabeth Dwyer saw “American Sniper.” “Chris Kyle’s story is so inspirational, and it gave me a better understanding of the war in Iraq,” she said. “I loved the movie so much, I would probably see it again.”
On Wednesday there was a pep rally for the second-semester sports. These include baseball, softball, rodeo and basketball. “It left me really excited for the upcoming games. I can’t wait to get out and support my fellow Ranger athletes,” said freshman Bailey Cook.
Tonight the spotlighted event will be the men and women’s basketball games beginning with the women at 5:30 p.m. The first 700 fans will receive a free Red Alert T-shirt and fans are also asked to wear red at the game. A spirit contest will be judged during the game. Senior point guard Darrian Dempsey said, “It is important for us to get the win and more so because it is Spirit Week, so we can give the fans what they want to see.”
Rounding out the last two days of Spirit Week are the baseball game tomorrow at 2 p.m. with free foam gloves and hot chocolate given out before the game and Saturday afternoon more basketball action starting with the women. At 1 p.m. there will be a chance to participate in half time challenges with prizes for the winners.
